LOCALISING (LOCALIZING)

What is localising?

Localising (sometimes spelt localizing) is more than just translating. In addition to converting the language of a text, the culture-specific and nation-specific elements in that text are adapted to suit the intended readership.

For example, when localising a German text into English for a British readership:

Prices in Swiss Francs or Euros will be given in Pounds Sterling.

DIN standards might be substituted by the equivalent BSI standards.

Times given in Central European Time will be converted to Greenwich Mean Time.

Metric measurements might be changed into imperial ones.

The German emergency telephone numbers (110 and 112) will be replaced by 999.

References to the German final school examination Abitur might be replaced by references to A-levels.

European electric plug and socket specifications could be changed to the British ones.

Explanations applying to left-hand drive vehicles may be adapted to suit right-hand drive vehicles.

The address of the German subsidiary will be replaced by the address of the British one.

The Whit-Monday holiday (Pfingstmontag) might be supplanted by the Spring Bank Holiday.

Rather than consuming Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cakes) you might take tea and biscuits.

Instead of travelling from Füssen to Flensburg, you would go from Lands End to John O'Groats ...

... And on reaching your destination, you might prefer to swap your Lederhose for a Kilt!
